Episode 2: Saskia Wilson-Brown

In Episode Two the COSP team is joined by Saskia Wilson-Brown, Founder and Director of the Institute for Art and Olfaction. The IAO first opened its doors in 2012 with a three pronged approach to support artisan perfumery including accessibility, experimentation, and advocacy. Saskia shares her personal definition of sustainability and how it has transformed over the years to not only include the environmental focus of her youth, but also how we behave as consumers and interact with the big C of Capitalism. She discusses how sustainability has become the activity of undoing the damage done by the economic system in which we exist. She speaks to her experience as an organizational director with a desire to be as sustainable as possible, but in some cases the resources to make that possible are not yet available such as access to bioplastics. While sustainability is being examined at all levels of the industry she expresses how a broader cultural shift is needed in terms of how we define luxury and what is expected from a professional perfume brand. The team and Saskia deliberate over the question of β€œCan the individual move the industry?” And discuss potential future resource collaborations for consumers and perfumers.
