Episode 6: Camino Verde

Part 1

In Episode Six, Part One, we had the pleasure of interviewing Robin Van Loon and Olivia Revilla from Camino Verde, a reforestation NGO located in the Peruvian Amazon in Tambopata Province. Camino Verde funds their reforestation initiatives through the sale of sustainably produced non-timber forestry products, such as the essential oil, Moena Alcanfor, featured by our very own Heather D’Angelo in Carta Fragrances’s debut parfum, Moena 12|69. Robin Van Loon is the Founder and Executive Director of Camino Verde. He is a writer, regenerative designer, and consultant in agroforestry, reforestation, and regenerative development. Olivia Revilla is the Farm Coordinator at Camino Verde’s Baltimori Reforestation Center. She manages the implementation and monitoring of agroforestry systems as well as the production of non-timber forest products. In this episode, Olivia and Robin explain the drivers of deforestation and its impact on forest ecosystems and communities. From losing traditional knowledge about medicinal plants to shifting values placed on exports and the influence on food security, Robin and Olivia provide a broad overview of the consequences of deforestation and how the Camino Verde team is working to restore this biologically rich ecosystem.

Part 2

In Episode Six, Part Two, the COSP team continues their conversation with Olivia Revilla and Robin Van Loon of Camino Verde. Olivia shares her knowledge about the potential of non-timber forest products to provide economic support for the Tambopata community in a sustainable way. Robin discusses the motivation behind their initiative to provide Rosewood trees to local community farmers as a means to achieve greater environmental and economic sustainability. They also discuss Camino Verde’s ongoing agroforestry research. Amidst all of these exciting projects, Olivia recounts the very real impact of Covid-19 on the staff of the Baltimori Reforestation Center and the surrounding community. We hope you all learned as much as we did!
